Freedom to Read Week 2008

Caution: the following may contain objectionable language, witchcraft & magic or profanity & blasphemy.

Gulliver’s Travels

Macbeth

Uncle Tom’s Cabin

Gone with the Wind

Should you refrain from reading these books, as well as many others, that have been challenged for their content?  Should they be taken off the shelves of libraries and out of schools?  Should other people be deciding for you what you can read?

That’s what Freedom to Read Week is about.  It’s “an annual event that encourages Canadians to think about and reaffirm their commitment to intellectual freedom, which is guaranteed them under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.” (freedomtoread.ca)

Check out the Freedom to Read display at the Welland Campus right now or see the display in the NOTL Campus in the month of March.  Sign out a challenged book today and exercise your intellectual freedom!

For more information, visit the Freedom to Read website.

Family Day

Posted in Hours by lhollemans on Feb 14, 2008

Just a reminder that the Library will be closed for Family Day on Monday, February 18, 2008.

That being said, this Friday is the perfect day to sign out a video or DVD from us!  Normally when you sign out a video or DVD on a Friday, you can keep it until Monday.  But since we’re closed this Monday, you would get to keep it until Tuesday!

So come in and borrow a movie or two tomorrow.

Just for fun this week

The following is a list of love related quotes from famous people, including Benjamin Franklin, Dr. Seuss, John Lennon, Eden Ahbez, Martin Luther King Jr., Robert Heinlein, Jimi Hendrix, Mother Theresa and Paul McCartney.

Check out the display case in the NOTL Campus Library or the Valentine’s book display in the Welland Campus Library for the answers!

When the power of love overcomes the love of power, the world will know peace.

Love is the only force capable of transforming an enemy to a friend.

You know you’re in love when you fall asleep because reality is finally better than your dreams.

The hunger for love is much more difficult to remove than the hunger for bread.

All you need is love.

And in the end… the love you take is equal to the love you make.

If you would be loved, love and be lovable.

Love is a condition in which the happiness of another person is essential to your own.

The greatest thing you’ll ever learn is just to love and be loved in return.
